Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates, a state in the Middle East. Located in the middle of the Arabian Peninsula and facing the Persian Gulf opposite Iran, the United Arab Emirates borders Oman to the east and the Saudi Arabian desert to the south and west.
The United Arab Emirates (and consequently Dubai) are about five to six hours by direct flight from most European cities. They are therefore an excellent mid-range destination to escape the harsh winter, thanks in part to the low cost of flights facilitated by fuel prices that are among the lowest in the world.
