Dubai is the city of record-breaking skyscrapers, we know that by now. That is why it is not surprising to learn that work is already underway here on a skyscraper that will most likely surpass the Burj Khalifa in height: the Dubai Creek Tower. The Creek Tower, or more simply ‘The Tower’, is a tower under construction in the Dubai Creek Harbour district that could become the tallest building in the world.
In October 2016, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, laid the foundation stone that started the construction of this skyscraper. Originally, this building was thought to be ready for EXPO 2020 in Dubai, but work slowed down due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The 828-metre-high Burj Khalifa in Dubai has held the record for the world’s tallest building since 2010, although this record may soon pass from Dubai to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In the Saudi city, in fact, the Jeddah Tower is under construction, a skyscraper located along the banks of the Red Sea, which once completed will have a total height of 1,008 metres. Dubai probably does not want to be deprived of this primacy, which is why it was decided to build the Dubai Creek Tower.
The famous architect Santiago Calatrava, whose architectural works are now world-famous, was commissioned to realise the project. For the Dubai skyscraper, Calatrava is said to have been inspired by Western and Islamic architecture, especially the minarets of mosques and the hanging gardens of Babylon. It is expected that the building will be a true blend of Eastern and Western styles.
According to initial rumours, the Tower will have 200 floors inside and will house hotels, flats, restaurants, shops and many other activities. At the top there will be several observation platforms, whose design seems to be inspired by the lily flower. In the centre, in fact, The Pinnacle Room will apparently be positioned, while all around there will be revolving spaces allowing a 360-degree view of the city.
The building will be equipped with the latest and most modern technological, energy and ecological systems with special attention to water recycling systems, solar panels and cooling systems that will be among the most advanced. For now it is known that the planned height of the tower could be just over 1,000 metres, but there is no definite information yet.
The Dubai Tower is under construction in the area known as Dubai Creek Harbour, a commercial area only ten minutes from Downtown Dubai. Known to be the city's most historic area, Dubai Creek Harbour is home to shops, cultural spaces, green areas and several residential zones.
