The Mall of the Emirates is one of the largest and most important shopping malls in Dubai. It is located along Sheikh Zayed Road and inside it are over 600 shops and 100 bars and restaurants, ranging from fast food outlets of the most famous international chains to gourmet starred restaurants, but its worldwide fame is largely due to Ski Dubai, the first winter-themed amusement park in the entire Middle East, including a 400-metre ski slope, two ski lifts, a snow park, a toboggan run and even an experience with a colony of penguins.
The construction of the Mall of the Emirates is incredible. The project was launched in October 2003 and the mall opened in record time, less than two years later, in September 2005, while Ski Dubai opened to the public in November of the same year.
A few years later, in September 2009, the centre was directly connected to the Dubai Metro ‘s red line (stop number 32, named precisely Mall of the Emirates) by means of an elevated walkway.
Inside the Mall of the Emirates there are more than 80 luxury boutiques and numerous other shops of all types and sizes, as well as a Carrefour hypermarket and some multi-product shops of the international chains Debenhams, Harvey Nichols, Marks & Spencer and others.
Naturally, any shopping craving will be satisfied: jewellery, clothing, toys, electronics, furniture, gadgets and even souvenirs from Dubai. A few banks, a post office and several bureaux de change are also located here. Adjacent to the mall are also two luxury hotels, the Kempinski and the Sheraton, with direct and exclusive access to the Mall of the Emirates.
Within the mall there are numerous attractions for the whole family: besides Ski Dubai of course, it is worth mentioning the Magic Planet (an entertainment complex with 12 bowling alleys, billiards, video games, driving simulators, 4D cinema and much more), the 14-screen VOX Cinema multiplex, and the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC), which opened its doors in November 2006 under the patronage of Princess Haya Hussein.
It is located on the second floor of the mall and consists of a two-storey theatre and some adjacent spaces dedicated to artistic research, art galleries, recreational spaces, workshops and even a music school.
Like many of Dubai’s multimillion-dollar structures, the Mall of the Emirates is constantly expanding. In September 2015, a project called Evolution 2015 was completed, which added a new wing to the mall called Fashion District with 30 luxury shops, as well as new taxi lanes and the creation of space within the mall for an additional 40 shops. The entire Evolution 2015 project gave the Mall of the Emirates over 26,000 extra square metres in total.
The Mall of the Emirates is home to Dubai’s only free luggage storage facility (with the exception of the one at the international airport, of course). Just walk down the pedestrian corridor that connects the metro to the mall, and immediately at the entrance you will find an information centre that is also responsible for looking after your luggage.
It is not signposted and not even very well known in the city, but it is a great way to visit the mall without having to lug around bags or jackets, especially on the day of departure from Dubai in case of an evening flight.
